The 27-year-old achieved the feat after he scored twin centuries against England in the first Test of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley in Leeds.
Having recorded scores of 134 and 118 in the two innings, Pant became only the second designated wicketkeeper-batter to score twin centuries in a Test match. Legendary Andy Flower was the first wicketkeeper-batter to record twin hundreds in a Test when he scored 142 and 199* against South Africa at Harare in 2001.
Pant also etched his name in the history books as he became the first Indian batter to score hundreds in both innings of a Test in England.
Overall, Pant became the seventh Indian to score centuries in both innings of a Test match. India’s newly-appointed Test vice-captain joined an elite list of players, featuring Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar (three times), Rahul Dravid (twice), Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma.
Meanwhile, Pant became the first Indian wicketkeeper-batter to surpass 800 ICC rating points. Pant broke MS Dhoni’s record after he jumped one spot to seventh on the list of Test batters with a career-best 801 rating points.
Former India captain MS Dhoni held the previous record with the best rating points by an Indian wicketkeeper after he registered 662 rating points in 2008.
Despite Pant’s scintillating centuries, England secured a five-wicket victory at Headingley and took a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series.
After a disappointing result, the Shubman Gill-led Indian cricket team will aim to quickly bounce back against England in the second Test scheduled to be played at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham starting on July 2.
