Biography
A flamboyant allrounder, who has displayed immense potential in white-ball and red-ball formats, Krishnappa Gowtham made a name for himself in the Indian cricketing ecosystem. While his father represented Karnataka in Kabaddi, Gowtham, himself, has been a mainstay for the state in domestic cricket.
Thanks to his consistent off spin, backed with the hard-hitting ability in the death overs, Gowtham quickly made a name for himself in the T20 format. However, over the course of his career, the Bengaluru-born player has etched his name in the Ranji Trophy books along with franchise cricket and other white-ball success.
The immensely passionate Gowtham came into the limelight at a very young age, where he scalped the second-most wickets in an U15 Zonal Tournament in Bengaluru. He made his T20 and first-class debut in the 2011/12 domestic season, impressing everyone with his all-round ability.
Nicked named Bhajji after his idol Harbhajan Singh, Gowtham’s breakthrough season came in the 2016/17 Ranji Trophy campaign. After making the side on the back of strong franchise cricket performances, Gowtham became the leading spinner of the side with 27 wickets in eight matches. His exploits included two consecutive five-wicket hauls and then career-best bowling figures of 7/108.
Meanwhile, Gowtham took his first strides in the Indian T20 League in 2017, when he was picked up by the Mumbai franchise. After some top performances in his first four seasons in the tournament, Gowtham was picked up by the Chennai franchise for INR 9.25 crores, making him the most expensive player in the league’s history.
Since then, the all-rounder has also made his international debut in ODIs and T20Is. In the Indian T20 League 2022 mega auction, Gowtham made his way to the City of Nawabs. Having already made a significant impact in the ongoing edition, the 2023 edition could turn out to be a promising one for the experienced Gowtham.
