West Indies pacer Shamar Joseph ran riot with the new ball against Australia on the opening day of the first Test at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old, who represents Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), produced an outstanding spell of 4/46 as West Indies bowled the Aussies out for 180 in 56.5 overs in their first innings.

Apart from Joseph, right-arm fast bowler Jayden Seales bagged a five-wicket haul for the hosts as the duo ripped through Australia’s batting lineup.

After Australia captain Pat Cummins opted to bat first, Joseph provided an early breakthrough as he trapped opening batter Sam Konstas (3) in front of the stumps in the fourth over.

Later, in the 10th over, the tearaway pacer removed all-rounder Cameron Green for 3 to put the visitors on the back foot.

The LSG fast bowler then claimed the huge wicket of Usman Khawaja (47) to end an 89-run stand with Travis Head for the fourth wicket.

Joseph continued his sensational spell as he cleaned up Beau Webster (11) with a peach of a delivery to pick up his fourth scalp. He finished with brilliant figures of 16-3-46-4.

Last year at the Gabba, Joseph produced a match-winning performance to guide the West Indies to their first win on Australian soil in 27 years.

Joseph has already claimed 17 wickets versus Australia in three Test matches at an average of 15.94.

Since making his Test debut against Australia in Adelaide in January 2024, Joseph has bagged 33 wickets in nine matches at an average of 24.91.

Meanwhile, West Indies were reduced to 57/4 at stumps, with debutant Brandon King (23 not out) and captain Roston Chase (1 not out) at the crease.

For Australia, left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc picked up two wickets, while pacers Josh Hazlewood and Cummins chipped in with one scalp each as the visitors clawed their way back into the first Test.
