Rishabh Pant scripts history with scintillating century against England at Headingley

Rishabh Pant slammed his seventh Test century on Day 2 of the first Test against England at Headingley on Saturday to record the most tons by an Indian wicketkeeper in Test cricket.
After Pant resumed his knock on the overnight score of 65 not out, India’s new Test vice-captain played some audacious shots as he later notched up his fourth Test century against England in just 146 deliveries.

This was Pant’s third Test hundred on English soil, following his 114 at The Oval in 2018 and 146 at Edgbaston in 2022. Earlier in 2021, Pant scored 101 to register his other Test ton against England in Ahmedabad.
With his seventh Test hundred, Pant also broke former India captain MS Dhoni’s record of most Test tons by an Indian wicketkeeper. Dhoni scored six centuries in his Test career.
Pant was later dismissed for 134, laced with 12 fours and six maximums.

Earlier on Day 1, Pant became the second Indian wicketkeeper to complete 3,000 runs in Test cricket after MS Dhoni.
Having reached the milestone in just his 76th Test innings, Pant became the second-fastest wicketkeeper to score 3,000 Test runs, only behind Australian legend Adam Gilchrist, who achieved the feat in 63 innings.
Pant also emerged as the highest-scoring Asian wicketkeeper-batter in the SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries after he overtook Dhoni’s tally of 1,731 runs from 32 Tests.

Meanwhile, India rode on centuries from captain Shubman Gill (147), Pant (134) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) to post 471 in their first innings.
After India resumed Day 1 at 359/3, England staged a fightback in the game as the hosts bowled out the visitors in the afternoon session.
For England, captain Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue were the wreckers-in-chief with four wickets each. Brydon Carse and Shoaib Bashir chipped in with one scalp each for the hosts.
