Nicholas Pooran breaks Chris Gayle’s T20 world record for most sixes in a year
The IPL 2024 and T20 World Cup may have ended but Nicholas Pooran's gazab andaz continues to flourish, no matter the stage.
The West Indian dynamo, known for having a penchant for big hitting, etched his name in the history books on Saturday by breaking the T20 world record for the most sixes in a calendar year. This record, which stood tall for nearly a decade, was previously held by none other than the ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle.
Playing for Trinbago Knight Riders against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots during the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Pooran scored 97 off just 43 balls. His knock was studded with seven fours and nine monstrous sixes, helping him to a new record of 139 sixes in 2024 - a number that promises to rise with four months still left in the year. Gayle’s previous record of 135 sixes, set in 2015, now stands second to the new king of sixes.
Pooran's brilliance helped his team post a mammoth 250/4 in 20 overs and win the contest by 44 runs.
In the IPL 2024, Pooran was our star performer. He amassed 499 runs from 14 matches, impressively finishing as the only batter in the top ten run-scorers of the IPL 2024 to consistently bat at number five or below.
What made Pooran’s IPL 2024 performance even more special was his strike rate of 178.21, the best in his six-year IPL career. He smashed 36 sixes and 35 fours and scored over 70% of his runs from boundaries.
Pooran carried this form into the T20 World Cup 2024, where he was a standout performer for the West Indies, earning a spot in the ICC’s Team of the Tournament alongside Marcus Stoinis. His explosive batting saw him top the charts for his team, racking up 228 runs in seven matches at a phenomenal strike rate of 146.15.
For LSG fans, this is just a glimpse of what Nicky P could bring to the table in IPL 2025.
