Nicholas Pooran bids adieu to international cricket

Lucknow Super Giants star batter Nicholas Pooran has announced his retirement from international cricket.
Having made his international debut in a T20I against Pakistan in September 2016, Pooran represented the West Indies cricket team in 167 matches.
“After much thought and reflection, I've decided to announce my retirement from international cricket,” Pooran wrote in his statement on Instagram.
“This game we love has given and will continue to give so much - joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies. Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field... it's hard to put into words what that truly means to me. To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart,” he added.
One of the world’s leading T20 batters, the 29-year-old drew the curtains down on his nine-year international career with 2,275 runs in 106 T20Is at a strike rate of 136.39, with 13 fifties.
Pooran ended his international career as the most capped West Indies player in T20 internationals (106 games) and also as the team’s leading run-scorer in the shortest format (2275), having surpassed Chris Gayle at the 2024 T20 World Cup.
After making his ODI debut against England in February 2019, the hard-hitting southpaw finished his international career with 1,983 runs in 61 games at an average of 39.66 and a strike rate of 99.15. He slammed three hundreds and 11 half-centuries in the ODI format.
Pooran also captained the West Indies cricket team in both white-ball formats in 2022, including at the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.
“Though this international chapter of my career closes, my love for West Indies cricket will never fade. I wish the team and the region nothing but success and strength for the road ahead,” Pooran added in his statement.
Pooran was one of the standout batters in the recently concluded IPL 2025. He accumulated 524 runs in 14 matches for the Super Giants at an impressive strike rate of 196.25, while also maintaining an average of 43.67. He smashed five fifties in the T20 tournament.
